Never before that I can think of has DC United made so many roster moves so late in the season. It's obvious that the team is trying to make a strong push for the playoffs, and trying to put together the best roster possible before the acquisition window closes for the season.
Since we last spoke, the team has made a couple new moves, including the signing of Lawson Vaughn. So for clarification, here is the roster as it currently stands:
Senior (20):1 Wicks, 2 John, 3 Habarugira, 4 James, 5 Burch, 6 Jakovic, 7 McTavish, 8 Namoff, 9 Vaughn, 10 Szetela, 11 Fred, 12 Gomez, 13 Jacobson, 14 Olsen, 15 Pontius, 16 Quaranta, 17 Simms, 18 Shipalane, 19 Emilio, 20 Moreno.

Boyzzz Khumalo - Disabled List as of 8/25. Eligible to return 10/14 vs. Columbus
Greg Janicki - Disabled List as of 9/11. Eligible to return for second match of first playoff series
Bill Hamid - Signed a Generation Adidas on 9/2. Eligible for the Developmental roster next season
Hopefully that helps clear things up. The most interesting part of this is that with N'Silu eligible to return after today's match, United is going to have to make a roster move to stay within the 24-man limit. Either N'Silu will have to be cut, placed on IR, or someone else will have to be cut or placed on the DL. My guess is he'll be cut, but we'll find out soon enough!

Roster reset
With DC United in the process of finalizing a loan for Tiyi Shipalane from the Harrisburg City Islanders, I was pretty darn confused as to the status of our roster, since we'll now have 27 players listed on our first team roster when the league maximum is 24. Sounds like a good time for a late season roster reset!
Senior (20):

Brandon Barklage has been placed on season-ending injured reserve, which freed up a spot for Ely Allen on the developmental roster.
David Habarugira was brought in under MLS's "Short-Term Injury Replacements" program (Rule II.K) for Ange N'Silu on 8/14/09, making N'Silu ineligible for at least 6 league matches.
So with Shipalane on his way south on I-83, United is going to have to make a roster move. And what of Adam Smarte? The Liberian PDL striker who has been training with the team for over a week now? The popular opinion is of course to overreact to the most recent matches and call for the sacrifice of Greg Janicki, but I don't think I see United cutting him just because of one awful performance. The more likely move I think will be to move Boyzzz Khumalo over to that short-term disabled list also. After all, how many South African wingers can you have on the active roster at once?

The first roster reset of 2009
With the sudden flurry of activities reported by Goff from the RFK grounds, after a long and uneventful offseason to this point, this seems like as good a time as any to reset the roster. This was my bit before it was Fullback's! Changes from last month are in bold:
Senior roster (20 slots): 1 Emilio, 2 Moreno, 3 Doe, 4 Pontius, 5 Fred, 6 Quaranta, 7 Khumalo, 8 Guerrero, 9 Simms, 10 Vide, 11 Olsen, 12 Jacobson, 13 Burch, 14 McTavish, 15 Janicki, 16 Roger, 17 Crayton, 18Wells Namoff. 2 slots remaining.
Developmental roster (4 slots): 1 Wallace (GA), 2 either Kocic or Thorpe. 2 slots remaining.
International players (assumed 8 slots): 1 Emilio, 2 Doe, 3 Fred, 4 Guerrero, 5 Roger, 6 Crayton. 2 slots remaining.

Roster reset
What better way to end 2008 than to post one of my patented roster resets. Things have changed dramatically around here with the new roster rules for 2009, but I think it's important to take a look at where United stands at the moment, if only just to highlight how many question marks there are going into next season. Since the MLS hasn't yet posted the official roster regulations for 2009, we're going to operate under the temporary assumptions that teams will still have 8 international player slots, and that 25 will still be the cutoff age for the Developmental roster.
Here's what we think we know:
Senior roster (now 20 slots): 1 Emilio, 2 Moreno, 3 Gallardo, 4 Fred, 5 Quaranta, 6 Khumalo, 7 Guerrero, 8 Simms, 9 Vide, 10 Burch, 11 McTavish, 12 Janicki, 13 Crayton, 14 Wells. 6 slots remaining.
Developmental roster (now 4 slots): 1 Cordeiro, 2 Thompson, 3 Carroll, 4 Zaher, 5 Thorpe. 1 player over the limit - No room for draft picks.
International players (assumed 8 slots): 1 Emilio, 2 Gallardo, 3 Fred, 4 Guerrero, 5 Crayton. 3 slots remaining.
It's hard to do this kind of analysis at this point in the year, because I've made a lot of assumptions in the info above. Joe Vide was relegated to the Developmental roster for some strange reason last year, but he seems to be a likely candidate to move up to the Senior roster in 2009. The same should be true for at least two of Cordeiro, Thompson, Carroll, and Zaher, to make room for our 2009 draft picks. James Thorpe is the only guy who I think should definitely stay on the D-roster. Ryan Miller and Ibrahim Koroma might be the most likely casualties of the reduction to the Developmental roster. Also, it's hard to say whether or not Khumalo is here on a green card and therefore exempt from international player status (similar to Moreno), but I'm assuming he's got a green card since he went to college in the US and has been playing here ever since.
So where does that leave us? What jumps out at me the most is that we've got 3 available international player slots. That's bound to get Kasper and Payne pretty excited. One of those slots could get used up pretty quick if Peralta chooses to re-sign (which I think he will), but we've certainly got the roster space and salary cap available for Kasper and Payne to do their usual and take a gamble on some other foreign players too. We certainly hope they do a better job at talent evaluation than last year. Because there's much less room for error this year with the smaller rosters.
Just because you see 6 available senior roster slots available, doesn't mean that we've got room to spare for unproven South Americans. Keep in mind that we've also got the question marks of Bryan Namoff and Quavas Kirk, who are out of contract, and Ben Olsen and Dominic Mediate, who may or may not return from injuries. Resetting the roster (again!)
Hey, remember that time earlier this month when I told you that United's senior roster appears set. And that the final senior roster slot would go to Jamil Walker. And that Guy Kpene would remain on the developmental roster. Yeah about that... Um...

Players still in consideration for contracts: Dan Owens, Jeff Curtin, and Cezar. Goff said it himself that the team will be in no hurry to finalize the roster, and I tend to agree. With 27 players under contract, the team is in pretty good shape, and it's not at all unusual to go into the season with less than the maximum of 28. I guess the front office and coaching staff don't expect to need Owens, Curtin, or Cezar in the next few games, so what's the point in officially adding them to the roster? Now its important to recognize that all three of these guys are eligible for the developmental roster. But also, judging from recent history (Burch, McTavish), United is not cheap about promoting players from the Dev roster to the Senior squad, so a guy like Stratford could always get a bump up if he earns it this year.
Now to back up and say peace out to our old pals 'Mil and Guy. Although both were completely absent from the scoring sheet in 2007 (one due to injury, one due to a lack of skill), both did make significant contributions to the team during their stay in DC, and I'd be surprised if either one didn't earn an opportunity with another MLS team at some point. Walker had 4 goals for the original San Jose Earthquakes in the 2003-04 seasons, so they'd be crazy not to take him back, unless they think they already have enough quality forwards (note the sarcasm?). I know I've been one of Kpene's most frequent detractors, so at the risk of contradicting myself, he did have some great touches/flicks, and was perhaps not utilized by United in the best way. If not other MLS teams, there's always the DC United Canadian Contingent.
